The Nelson Star SheShed - Our Top Styling Tips For Success!

Based in beautiful and sunny Nelson Tasman, New Zealand, the SheShed office has recently given the Star display cabin a spruce up! Situated inside the office, the 3m x 3m Star SheShed is now open the the public during weekdays for you to walk through and experience the cabin for yourself. For those who cannot make it to Nelson, or are located out of New Zealand, one of our friendly staff will be happy to catch up with you over a Zoom tour, where they can take you around the Star Cabin and answer all your questions at the same time!

The Star Cabin is a great multifunctional space that can be versatile for many uses such as a guest house, spare bedroom, office space, hair studio, beauty therapy, home business, kids retreat, granny flat, bach or holiday house extension… basically whatever your space needs, this SheShed is the solution! Here, we dive into some of our styling choices, including paint colors and furniture pieces!

When we decided to restyle the Star Cabin, we also knew we wanted to do something different, maybe a gender neutral cabin this time that has a bit of quirky personality - and a bit of colour! Keeping the Light Reflectance Value in mind, we wanted to choose a color for the SheShed that would not only be bold and welcoming, but also great for the sunshine element - as New Zealand and Australia have very strong sun that can contract the timber very rapidly if it is painted a dark colour!

We used the SheShed blog: What You Need to Know Before Painting Your She Shed Black, which goes over the Light Reflectance Value explanation really well! We knew we needed to aim for a colour that sat above 40-45%.

Luckily we had a few great colours to choose from, and the Resene Website was great for researching our colour swatches to ensure they were over an LRV of 40. In the end we chose a beautiful shade called Resene Bounty. It has an LRV value of 41, so we know we are safe and sound with this choice!

When it came to deciding colours, we had a few things to consider. We knew we needed a welcoming colour as this 9m2 Star Cabin is the first thing people see when they walk into our Nelson office! We also knew we wanted it to suit the olive trees at the front, tie in with the natural wood colour, which we were keeping on the floor, window and doors, and also work with the electric guitar we were definitely going to have on the wall. For the interior paint we chose Resene Quarter Alabaster - a beautiful and bright shade of white that looks fantastic in an indoor setting and suits most other colours too. We know that creating a mood board is a fantastic way to visualize the styling of your SheShed before it is painted and styled - our one is in the picture above! A mood board allows you to place all your chosen colours and styling items in the same space to see if they all look good when they are together. When we were really happy with how our mood board turned out - we felt confident to push go on the paint work, knowing it would be a win!

Our finishing touches included some ceiling lighting, old vinyl records and CD's, desk equipment for the office end, a retro print on the wall, the wall clock, a mirror, bar stools... and a sneaky cocktail corner! This Star SheShed has definitely become a fun part of our office - we cannot wait to see what our future customers do with their space!

Come along to see this Star Cabin at our office at 145 McShane Road, Richmond, Nelson Tasman. If you cannot make it to see this cabin in person, do not worry!
