5 Benefits of Getting a SheShed Approved Builder to Construct Your Cabin

One of the great things about a SheShed is that most of the cabins in our range can easily be constructed as a DIY project... but that doesn't necessarily mean that you want to construct it yourself.

We often have customers ask if we can build the cabin for them and whilst we don't provide building services, we do have a list of recommended builders and trades we can provide you with, (see here) because in some cases it's a much better option to have someone else construct your SheShed for you and here are 5 reasons why;

Building a SheShed timber cabin

1. Save yourself time

All of our flatpack timber cabins are constructed using our sophisticated interlocking system, this means that the build method for all the cabins is the same, the main difference in build time comes down to size of the cabin being constructed. The build time for a SheShed cabin is anywhere from 2 days up to 12 days and we recommend having 2 people to build your SheShed. Contracting a builder or handy person to do the construction saves your time, you could have your cabin constructed whilst you're at work! It also means you wouldn't need to spend your precious weekend time or take time off work to build it.

2. Getting the foundations of your SheShed right

Each SheShed needs to be built on a solid foundation and the foundation that is best suited to your property will depend on a few factors such as:

  • How flat is the surface where you want to place your shed?
  • Do you plan to move your shed in the future?
  • Do you want to add a small deck?
  • How much weight do you expect the shed floor to support?

Not only do you need to consider the style of foundation you use for your SheShed, but you also need to consider the material it's constructed with, timber, steel or concrete. If you have a flat, clear area, our steel foundation kit that easily bolts together can be a great timesaving option. If you are unsure about your space, a qualified builder will be able to give you advice around the foundation that is best suited to your property.

3. Trouble shoot any issues easily

Even though all care is taken to ensure the product you receive from us is of the highest quality, the construction of a flatpack/kitset timber cabin may be an overwhelming process for some people who may have less DIY experience. As with all projects, small issues may arise during the build; a qualified and experienced builder has likely seen it all before and can help you easily navigate any issues which may arise.

4. They've got the right tools for the job

To successfully build a SheShed you are going to require a few tools that are quite common such as a hammer, tape measure, rubber mallet and step ladder. However, you're also going to need a few tools that may be less common for the average person to own such as a battery drill, drill bits and a compound saw. These tools are quite standard for a builder to own and having the right tools for the job is important not only to ensure the job is done correctly but also safely. The margin for error is high when you're unfamiliar working with power tools or at heights whereas your builder will be comfortable with these tools and know the safety limits with which they should work in. Your safety should be a priority when constructing your SheShed.

5. Easily finish off the look of your SheShed with a deck or verandah

A lot of our customers complete the look of their SheShed and enhance its usability by adding a deck or verandah to it. And whilst the deck or verandah might be one of the last things you think about when planning the space for your SheShed, it's important that these are considered from the start as they'll require foundation and prep work as well. A builder will know this and will be able to make allowances for these during the build process, as well as being able to construct the deck or verandah for you.
