One of the main reasons our customers purchase a SheShed is because they need a dedicated space to pursue something – a business, a hobby, a passion and for Jimmy and Tam, winners of The Block 2020, it was no different.
Tam had taken over a section of Jimmy's shed and made it an art space for herself and their daughter Frankie. As you can imagine, this didn't really work well for anyone, not Tam and Frankie and certainly not Jimmy and so the search for a dedicated art space for Tam and Frankie began, leading them to SheShed.
After falling in love with the SheShed Star Cabin, they embarked on an exciting journey to create the perfect creative space. Here’s their story, from inspiration to the final touches, and why they would recommend a SheShed.
Tam explains that their initial attraction to the Star Cabin came from its perfect fit with their existing home design.
"The fact that the style of the Star cabin matched the existing look of our house was what initially drew us to a SheShed. Then, the more we looked into it, the more we fell in love with it. Cuteness factor was a definite as well!" she says.
The Star Cabin’s aesthetic not only matched their property but also complemented the overall.
One of the key features that attracted them to the Star Cabin was the exposed timber look, which fit perfectly with the natural vibe they were going for. "The fact we could achieve an exposed timber look throughout was a big plus," says Tam. Jimmy and Tam also loved the classic A-frame style, which mirrored the design of Jimmy’s shed. Watching the assembly videos online further fueled their excitement, especially seeing how quick and straightforward the construction process seemed.
Incredibly, Jimmy built the entire cabin in just three days by himself, far exceeding their expectations.
"It took Jimmy three days in total on his own. This was mind-blowing - the fact he could build the whole cabin with no assistance was one thing, but three days from start to finish was way beyond our expectations," shares Tam.
The simplicity of the flatpack design, with its interlocking walls, made the process even smoother.
The design allowed for quick assembly without the need for any specialised tools or experience, and Jimmy tackled the project with ease.
Something we and our customers love about our cabins is that the design allows for plenty of personalisation when constructing and decorating. Jimmy and Tam added a few personal touches of their own, they built a custom verandah out the front “to add to the cuteness” says Tam. They planned for this during the construction of the foundation for their SheShed. They also insulated the roof, a common optional upgrade our customers often make which makes a huge difference in comfort
When it came to styling the interior, this is where Jimmy stepped back and Tam’s creativity took centre stage. She really embraced the natural timber look, creating a vintage 70s-inspired vibe.
"By keeping the natural timber look internally, it really brought on that 70's feel, so that sent me on a search for the perfect vintage lounge and furnishings to complement that era," she explains.
To balance creativity with functionality, she installed shelving along the walls to store books and art supplies, as well as adding curtains and some lighting.
Another big draw card to a SheShed was that they can be painted, this meant that it was easy for Jimmy and Tam to ensure consistency with their home. "It’s no secret that our house has a lot of black, so we wanted our SheShed to blend into the surroundings and look like it was there the whole time," says Tam. They added matching brass outdoor lights to the cabin to ensure the design flowed seamlessly from their house to the SheShed.
Jimmy and Tam are now even bigger fans of SheShed and have already recommended it to others. "We have 100% recommended SheShed to everyone. They are such a useful use of space, adding value to any property," says Tam. From their experience with the easy assembly to the quality of the materials, they’ve been thrilled with their decision. "We would just love to thank SheShed for a seamless transaction. From deciding the design we wanted all the way to delivery, it was a great experience."
Tam and Frankie now have their own dedicated art studio, and Jimmy has happily reclaimed his shed. Reflecting on the process, Tam shares one of her favourite moments: "The funniest part was Jimmy said he was just going to see how the walls were constructed by putting maybe three rows up. I came back out an hour later, and the whole four walls were fully constructed! I was blown away."
Their journey with SheShed has been really fun, showing just how simple it is to create a functional, beautiful space that fits seamlessly into your home. Whether you're looking for a dedicated art studio, home office, or just in need of some extra space, a SheShed cabin could be the perfect solution.
