When freelance copywriter and mum of two, Laura, found out she was expecting her second child, she knew something had to change - her home office was about to be claimed by the newest family member and working from a cramped corner of the kitchen table was not an option and neither was moving house! But with a spacious backyard, she saw an opportunity to create the perfect solution: a SheShed cabin.
Searching for a backyard studio that was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing proved to be a challenge. "I was struggling to find a cabin that was just the right size and price but also offered an aesthetic that I could work with," she explains. That all changed when she stumbled upon a SheShed feature showcasing Waves Hair Salon. "Knowing it would be both functional and beautiful sealed the deal."
With the decision made, it was time to bring the vision to life. Laura and her husband, Dave, took on the build themselves, despite not having extensive DIY experience.
"We had a bunch of questions, and the communication from the SheShed team was always quick and helpful," she says.
Before assembling the cabin, they laid a concrete foundation and relocated their garden shed. The kitset nature of the SheShed meant that once they got started, everything "fell into place quite quickly."
While they had help from family and friends at times, it was mostly Dave who took on the building process, working over weekends to get everything just right.
The SheShed cabin needed to serve two purposes: a space for Laura to write (for her copywriting business) and also a space for guests to stay. "Tide Studio is the name of my business, so we decided to go for a coastal vibe," she shares.
They painted the exterior and interior walls white, keeping the floors and ceiling natural with a simple stain. To maximise space, they opted for a beautiful pull-out couch instead of a traditional bed. The finishing touches, bamboo pendant lights, a Moroccan rug, sheer white curtains, and a few carefully chosen decor pieces all bring warmth and personality to the space. "All I need now is some artwork on the walls and some landscaping out the front!"
"It’s been SO incredible being able to come back from maternity leave and 'go to work' in my own beautiful, clean, kid-free space," she says. "Even though it’s just a few steps from my back door, having a physical separation between work and home life has made a huge difference." As a writer, creativity is key, and she finds her SheShed helps her focus and get in the zone.
The space has also been a hit with friends and family. "We’ve had a few friends sleep over, and it’s been so nice to be able to offer them a beautiful space to stay. My Zoom meeting background is also looking a whole lot prettier and more professional now!"
For anyone considering setting up a business in a SheShed, Laura recommends having a clear vision. "Start mood boarding and gathering ideas early, it’ll help guide all your design choices along the way."
Her top tip? "Invest in a heat pump! The cabin gets pretty cold in winter, but with a good heat pump, it only takes a few minutes to warm up and feel cosy."
